Nepal's Electoral Landscape Witnesses Significant Alliance Formed By TV Host and Former Musician Mayor

In a significant move ahead of next year's general election, a pair of high-profile figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition comes in the aftermath of large-scale and deadly young people's demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the ouster of the sitting government.

A Commitment to Address Youth Demands

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially vowed to focus on the issues highlighted by the younger generation. This commitment comes after the violent anti-corruption unrest that took place in September, which resulted in significant casualties.

"Consensus must not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane following the deal was finalized.

The late summer uprising was sparked by widespread frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a spark for underlying discontent stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and longstanding allegations of systemic political corruption.

Details of the New Electoral Partnership

According to the formal pact, the roles for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing broad discontent with the country's established political leadership. He has in the past held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key player in Nepal's current political transition. He played a role in setting up the caretaker government that came to power after the previous administration was removed.

Wider Government Consultations Taking Place

In a related development, the current interim prime minister recently held consultations with several major political leaders. These talks involved ex- prime ministers and the presidents of rival mainstream parties, marking the initial such gathering since the period of the protests.

After these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that holding a credible election is a shared duty. The message affirmed the government's commitment to guaranteeing a secure and open atmosphere for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
